Lekkas on Santorini Earthquakes: Strong Tremors Likely, But Major Quakes Unlikely

The president of the OASPEfthymios Lekkas

Efthymios Lekkas, president of the OASP, addressed the ongoing series of earthquakes in Santorini, explaining that while there is a real risk, the seismic activity is not linked to volcanic activity.

Speaking on SKAI, Lekkas stated that the chances of an earthquake exceeding 5.0 on the Richter scale are likely, though the likelihood of one surpassing 5.5 is lower, and a quake above 6.0 is considered almost impossible. He emphasized that the seismic activity might continue for a few days, and in extreme cases, it could persist for several months, referencing the prolonged earthquake activity in Arkalochori several years ago, which lasted from March to September.

Lekkas assured the public that there is no volcanic risk at present, as confirmed by the seismic and volcanic risk committee. However, there are concerns regarding landslides, potential tsunami risks, and the stability of older buildings. He recommended halting concrete construction to ensure the structural integrity of buildings in the future.

In the coming days, Lekkas revealed that both the seismic and volcanic risk committees will meet again, and new seismographs and measurement instruments will be installed for continuous monitoring. Special attention is being given to the unusual seismic activity between Santorini and Amorgos, which has led to heightened mobilization.
