The municipality of Thera (Santorini) has approved a third round of emergency measures on Tuesday in response to the ongoing seismic activity affecting the region.
The decision, issued by Deputy Mayor for Civil Protection, Iakovos Lignos, outlines updated protocols to ensure the safety of residents and visitors.
The new measures, following previous emergency decisions (Nos. 27/2025 and 28/2025), include the closure of all schools and the cancellation of indoor events and gatherings until Friday, February 7. Additionally, access to several areas, including Ammoudi, Armeni, Korfos Thirasias, and the old port of Fira, is prohibited.
The municipality has also issued urgent safety recommendations for citizens, advising them to avoid abandoned buildings, opt for secure routes, and take extra caution when navigating rural roads and coastal areas, particularly in regions prone to landslides. In case of strong tremors, residents are instructed to evacuate beaches immediately and secure non-structural elements such as heavy hanging objects and false ceilings.
In addition to these measures, the municipality has ordered the draining of swimming pools, banned all construction activities, and restricted access to Athinio port, allowing entry only when ships are docking.
On Tuesday morning, two earthquakes struck the region of Amorgos, measuring 4.8 and 4.7 on the Richter scale. The quakes, which occurred at 08:09 and 08:53, had epicenters located 19 km and 17 km south-southwest of Arkesini, respectively. These tremors add to the ongoing seismic concerns affecting the area.
Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge the public to stay informed and follow safety protocols.
