quake 3

A double seismic tremor measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck the sea area between Santorini and Amorgos in the early hours of Thursday (1:02 AM and 1:03 AM local time), according to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens.

The first earthquake, recorded at 1:02 AM, had its epicentre 23 km southwest of Arkesini, Amorgos, approximately 228 km southeast of Athens. Just a minute later, a second tremor of the same magnitude was recorded with the same epicentre, at a distance of 229 km southeast of Athens.

In response to the seismic activity, the Municipality of Amorgos has been placed under a state of emergency, a decision made by the Secretary General of Civil Protection, Vassilis Papageorgiou. This emergency status will remain in effect until March 11.

It is worth noting that the Municipality of Santorini had already been placed under a state of emergency due to previous seismic concerns. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, assessing potential risks in the region.
