Greek supermarkets offer some of the most affordable prices in Europe, with the cost of a “typical household basket” lower than in France, the UK, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, and Romania, according to a survey by the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods (IELKA) released on Monday.
The study compared prices across 41 product categories using data from national price comparison platforms and supermarket chain pricing. The analysis considered both branded and private-label products, accounting for variations in VAT across different countries.
According to the findings, Greece‘s average supermarket basket is significantly cheaper than those in Germany (by 39%), France (27%), the UK (24%), and Italy (11%). Prices in Portugal (7%), Spain (8%), and Romania (5%) were also higher than in Greece.
The survey highlights Greece’s competitive grocery prices compared to other European nations, reinforcing the country’s affordability in everyday consumer goods.
