Greek Civil Protection Chief Resigns Amid Tempi Train Crash Investigation

Greek Civil Protection Secretary General Vassilis Papageorgiou has resigned in a move aimed at "facilitating the work of Greek justice" in the ongoing investigation into the deadly Tempi train collision, government sources confirmed on Tuesday.

In his resignation letter to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Papageorgiou stressed his commitment to proving that he bore no responsibility for any operational actions or omissions related to the accident scene.

Government sources clarified that his resignation was voluntary, mirroring the recent departure of Deputy Minister for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Christos Triantopoulos. Triantopoulos stepped down for reasons of propriety as he, too, is under investigation in connection with the disaster.

The Tempi train collision, which occurred two years ago, remains one of Greece’s worst rail tragedies, sparking widespread public outcry and ongoing legal proceedings. Authorities continue to investigate potential lapses in safety measures and emergency response efforts.
