Shipwreck off Farmakonisi: 19 Survivors Rescued, Search Continues for Missing

Farmakonisi, Greece – A tragic shipwreck occurred off the coast of Farmakonisi on Saturday night (March 22), prompting an extensive search and rescue operation by the Greek Coast Guard.

As of Sunday, March 23, one person has been found dead, while 19 migrants, including three minors, were rescued and are now receiving treatment at Leros Hospital. Authorities report that all survivors are currently out of danger.

Initial reports from the Coast Guard indicated that a man was found unconscious, and two children were in critical condition upon discovery. The total number of people onboard the vessel has not yet been determined, adding uncertainty to the ongoing rescue efforts.

The Coast Guard launched overnight searches following the incident, which continue today with the deployment of three vessels, a lifeboat, and an Air Force helicopter scouring the broader area surrounding the shipwreck. The operation is being coordinated by the Unified Search and Rescue Operations Center.
