Petro Georgiou, a proud Australian of Greek heritage, was a principled figure whose sharp policy insights earned him respect across Parliament. For over 15 years, he served the Kooyong electorate with unwavering dedication as a Liberal backbencher under the Howard Government, balancing loyalty to his party with a deep commitment to his constituents.
Known for his conviction, Petro fearlessly voiced his beliefs, even when they diverged from the Liberal Party’s stance. A migrant from Greece, he became a passionate advocate for migrant rights and multiculturalism throughout his political career and beyond. His five-year tenure as Director of the Australian Institute of Multicultural Affairs further solidified his legacy in promoting cultural diversity.
In 2013, Petro’s contributions to Parliament, multiculturalism, and human rights were recognized with his appointment as an Officer of the Order of Australia, a testament to his impactful public service. His personal journey as a migrant mirrored Australia’s broader migration success story, making him a symbol of the nation’s multicultural ethos.
Petro’s passing leaves a void in the many communities he supported through his advocacy and goodwill. On behalf of the Federal Coalition, I offer my deepest condolences to his partner, Roxanne, and his cherished children, Dino and Alexia. Petro Georgiou will be deeply missed by his wide circle of friends and the countless lives he touched. May he rest in peace.
