On Monday, UNESCO’s executive board designated February 9 as “World Greek Language Day,” coinciding with the anniversary of the 1857 death of Dionysios Solomos, Greece’s national poet.

Georgios Koumoutsakos, Greece’s UNESCO delegate, called it “an international recognition of our language’s timelessness, universality, and contribution to humanity’s cultural heritage—a day of joy and pride,” in a statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency.
