Greek Presidential Guard (Evzones) Sydney: A Week of Honor and Heritage in 2025

EVZONES: Greek Presidential Guard in Sydney: A Powerful Tribute to Anzac-Greek Bonds in 2025

In a stirring display of honor and remembrance, the Greek Presidential Guard, known as the Evzones, graced Sydney, Australia, with their presence, commemorating the deep historical ties between Greece and Australia. Their visit, marked by ceremonial marches, church services, and community engagements, underscored a shared legacy forged in the crucible of war, particularly during the Battles of Greece and Crete in World War II. From April 28 to May 4, 2025, the Evzones captivated Sydney, paying tribute to the Anzacs and the enduring mateship between the two nations.

A Historic Bond Honored

The Evzones' visit was a poignant acknowledgment of the Anzacs who fought alongside Greek forces against Mussolini and Hitler's Axis powers. Approximately 1,700 Anzacs lost their lives in Greece, with over half unrecovered or unidentified, their sacrifice forever etched into Greek soil. Their presence also highlighted the contributions of nearly 2,700 Australians of Greek heritage who served in iconic battles, including the Boer War, Gallipoli, the Western Front, Greece, Crete, the Middle East, Kokoda, the Pacific, Korea, and Vietnam.

The Hellenic Club Sydney, in collaboration with the Joint Committee for the Commemoration of the Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign, and with the support of the NSW Government, hosted the visit of the Greek Presidential Guards to Sydney in 2025, which included multiple events marking ANZAC Day and celebrating Greek-Australian ties.

The Evzones were welcomed with a Doxology service led by Archbishop Makarios and attended by NSW Premier Chris Minns. Over the week, they visited landmarks, schools, and age care homes, reinforcing cultural and historical bonds. They marched at the ANZAC Memorial, participated in diplomatic gatherings at the Sydney Greek Consulate and NSW Parliament, and engaged with the community through receptions and tributes. Their visit honored shared history, sacrifice, and national pride.

Despite some rain cutting short their Martin Place guard of honor, the Evzones kept their tight schedule with school assemblies, religious services, and cultural events, including a luncheon celebrating AHEPA NSW's 91st anniversary. Their presence left a lasting impression, uniting Sydney's Greek community in remembrance and tradition.

A Legacy of Courage and Compassion

The Evzones' visit also shed light on lesser-known stories of sacrifice and solidarity. During WWII, Greek civilians risked their lives to hide and protect Anzac soldiers from Axis forces, aiding their escape or supporting their resistance efforts. These acts of compassion, often at significant personal cost, exemplified the profound bond between Greeks and Anzacs. The Evzones' presence in Sydney served as a poignant reminder of these selfless acts, resonating with Greek-Australian communities that cherish this shared history.

The Battles of Greece, Crete, and Kalamata were particularly significant, involving 17,125 Anzacs from the 6th Division. These campaigns saw 646 killed, 1,001 wounded, and over 5,132 taken as prisoners of war—more than in any other Anzac campaign. Of these, 242 died while prisoners of war. The survivors, dubbed the "Forgotten Anzacs," endured years of internment, their stories often untold. The Evzones' visit brought renewed attention to their courage, echoing the 24-hour vigil they maintain in Athens to honour all who served Greece, including the Anzacs.

A Turning Point in History

The Greek resistance delivered the Axis Powers' first major defeat, and the defense of Greece and the island of Crete by the Anzacs delayed the Nazi invasion of Russia into the harsh winter months. This pivotal moment altered the course of World War II, underscoring the strategic importance of their alliance. Had Greece not resisted, the war's outcome might have been different, a fact recognized by global leaders of the era. The Evzones' visit to Sydney served as a reminder of this critical contribution, celebrating a legacy of defending democratic freedoms and the rule of law.

Lemnos and Gallipoli: A Shared Haven

The island of Lemnos, a critical base during the Gallipoli campaign, provided a safe haven for Anzacs, with its hospitals and nurses saving countless lives. The Evzones' visit evoked memories of this connection, highlighting the role of Greek compassion in alleviating the suffering of Australian soldiers. This shared history, coupled with the sacrifices of Greek civilians who protected Anzacs from Nazi capture, reflects a bond that transcends generations.

Community Engagement and Reflection

During their visit, the Evzones connected with Sydney's Greek-Australian community through events at schools, churches, and cultural institutions. Their engagements began with the Doxology Service at the Cathedral of the Annunciation in Redfern, led by Archbishop Makarios, marking their official welcome to Sydney. The following evening, Business Sydney hosted a welcome reception for the Consul General of Greece in Sydney in their honor.

The Evzones also visited the three Greek Schools in Sydney: St. Spyridon College, St. Euphemia College, and All Saints Grammar, which foster student pride and unity. Age Care homes of St. Basil's in Randwick and Lakemba, as well as the Greek Community Home. The Anzac legacy was celebrated at two special events—a luncheon hosted by AHEPA NSW and another at the Hellenic Club of Sydney—where veterans, community leaders, and historians shared insights, enriching the commemorations.

The Evzones' march through Sydney, from Hyde Park to Kogarah, Parramatta, and Belmore, captivated onlookers. Their traditional uniforms and disciplined movements embody a timeless respect for shared values. Their visit was not merely ceremonial but a profound acknowledgment of mateship that has endured through war, migration, and time.
