The leaders of SYRIZA, the Greek Communist Party (KKE), the New Left, and the Course of Freedom have signed a joint statement calling on the Greek government to take decisive diplomatic action amid the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza.
The initiative, spearheaded by Communist Party of Greece (KKE) General Secretary Dimitris Koutsoumbas, resulted in a joint letter addressed to Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis. Co-signatories include SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance parliamentary leader Socrates Famellos, New Left leader Alexis Charitsis, and Zoe Konstantopoulou, head of the Plefsi Eleftherias party.
In the statement, the opposition leaders urgently call on the Greek government to take advantage of its current role as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, demanding immediate action to halt the genocide in Gaza.
"In Gaza, and before the eyes of all humanity, a real genocide is taking place that to date has resulted in over 61,000 deaths, 119,000 injuries and hundreds of thousands of uprooted people, the vast majority of whom are civilians.” the statement reads.
The letter calls for:
- An immediate ceasefire and halt of all Israeli military operations in Gaza.
- The opening of all humanitarian aid corridors to deliver urgently needed food, water, medicine, and medical personnel.
- Explicit condemnation of Israel's actions as “crimes against humanity and war crimes.”
- The termination of military cooperation between Greece and Israel.
- Implementation of the Hellenic Parliament's 2015 unanimous resolution to recognise the State of Palestine based on 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
- An invitation to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to address the Greek Parliament and inform citizens about the situation in Gaza.
The letter criticises the Israeli government's blockade on aid for Gaza and its targeting of civilians and humanitarian organisations, noting how UN personnel and medical workers have been among the victims.
The joint action comes amid rising global concern over the scale of civilian suffering in Gaza and increasing international calls for a ceasefire. The International Criminal Court has reportedly issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over alleged war crimes, a development referenced in the opposition’s statement.
“The Greek government has no political, legal or moral right to justify and ultimately support these crimes,” the statement asserts.
This rare collaboration among Greece’s fractured left signals growing domestic pressure on the conservative government to reevaluate its foreign policy stance in the Middle East, especially in light of its close ties with Israel.
