Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside the Israeli embassy in Athens on Thursday, 22 May.
Protestors held placards, waved flags and chanted slogans calling for the freedom of the Palestinian people.
The demonstration was organised by trade unions affiliated with the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) such as the All Workers’ Militant Front (PAME), the Federation of Women of Greece (OGE), the Greek Committee for International Detente and Peace (EEDYE) and other mass organisations, demanding an immediate end to the genocide of Palestinian people by the state of Israel.
The trade unionists who spoke at the rally voiced the sentiments of the overwhelming majority of the Greek people who are in opposition with the Greek government’s support of Israel.
"We are here to condemn the murderous state and government of Israel, which continues with the backs of the European Union, the US and NATO, to mercilessly bomb Gaza," said one demonstrator.
"They have killed thousands of people. They have killed 16,000 children. And today they are depriving the children of Gaza of humanitarian solidarity." she said.
"Right now there is a genocide happening and they know it is genocide. They are starving, and people cannot remain silent because silence is complicity." another protestor said.
"It is shameful and we cannot remain silent."
