Greek-Israeli Business Conference Targeted by Protest and Vandalism

Tensions flared in central Athens on Wednesday morning as unknown individuals threw paint and banners at a hotel in Omonia Square, which was hosting a high-level conference on strengthening economic ties between Greece and Israel.

The conference, organized by the Piraeus Chamber of Commerce and Industry in collaboration with the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, had initially been scheduled for Tuesday at the Chamber's headquarters but was postponed and relocated to the hotel for undisclosed reasons.

Earlier in the day, members of PAME, the All-Workers Militant Front, held a protest outside the venue. They were blocked by police from entering the building. The demonstration was attended by several prominent figures from the Greek Communist Party (KKE), including Members of Parliament Nikos Abatiello, Christos Katsotis, and Diamanto Manolakou, as well as MEP Nikos Papadakis. Also present were Central Committee members Themis Gionis, Theodore Chionis, and Yannis Protoulis.

The protest and acts of vandalism appeared to target the Greek-Israeli economic partnership, though no group has formally claimed responsibility. Authorities have not yet released information about potential suspects, and no injuries or arrests have been reported.

The incident underscores the political sensitivities surrounding Greece's foreign economic relations, particularly those involving Israel, and reflects broader tensions within segments of Greek society over the country’s strategic alliances.
