Greece is developing its own artificial intelligence supercomputer, Digital Governance Minister Dimitris Papastergiou announced on Friday at the “Artificial Intelligence as an Accelerator of Digital Transformation in the Public Sector and Businesses” conference.

“The final permit was issued just two days ago, allowing work to progress much faster. The machine has been ordered, the tender completed, and we have a contractor,” he said.

Papastergiou noted that Greece was among the first countries to submit a successful proposal for this initiative.

“We’ve joined the AI factories,” he said, also announcing that Greece is submitting a new proposal for an artificial intelligence factory in Western Macedonia, a region in need of support.

He highlighted two flagship projects, Daidalos and AI Factory Pharos, which will drive the effective use of artificial intelligence in Greece, focusing on three key areas: health, culture, and civil protection.

The minister also discussed Greece’s microsatellite program, which will provide valuable data. “Early Sunday, we will launch our first microsatellite, Transporter 14, built by Democritus University, marking the start of its journey into space. This will be followed by Transporter 15 and 16. The data from these satellites, combined with artificial intelligence, will enable us to develop innovative models for civil protection and agricultural production,” he said.
