Greece on High Alert as Wildfire Risk Soars Ahead of Weekend

Greek authorities have issued a very high wildfire risk warning (Category 4) for Friday, June 28, across several regions, including Attica, Kythera, Evia, Laconia, and the North Aegean islands of Lesvos, Chios, Samos, and Ikaria, according to the Fire Risk Forecast Map released by the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection.

In response to the escalating threat, Minister Yannis Kefalogiannis convened an emergency inter-ministerial meeting on Thursday afternoon following an earlier session of the Scientific Risk Assessment Committee. The meetings aimed to coordinate preventive measures amid what officials are calling an “explosive mix” of dangerous weather conditions.

The Ministry has warned that the combination of extreme heat, lightning, dry thunderstorms, and sudden gusts of wind could rapidly trigger and spread fires, particularly in mainland and northern Greece. The situation is expected to worsen over the weekend, with strong winds forecast for Eastern Macedonia, Thrace, the Eastern Aegean, Crete, the Cyclades, the Dodecanese, Attica, Eastern Central Greece, and the Eastern Peloponnese.

In light of the elevated threat, the Hellenic Fire Service remains on high alert, and public access to forests, groves, and parks in at-risk areas will be strictly limited to reduce the chance of human-caused ignition.

The Ministry is urging citizens and visitors to remain vigilant, avoid any outdoor activities that could spark fires, and follow all guidance issued by civil protection authorities.
