Melbourne’s Greek Community Mourns Loss of Pastry Icon Vassilis Batzogiannis

Melbourne, July 2, 2025 The Greek community in Melbourne is grieving the loss of Vassilis “Bill” Batzogiannis, the beloved owner of International Cakes on Lonsdale Street, who passed away at the age of 76.

Batzogiannis, who hailed from Katerini in northern Greece, arrived in Australia in his early 20s and took over International Cakes in 1973. For over five decades, the pastry shop stood as a cherished hub in Melbourne’s once-vibrant Greek precinct, offering traditional Greek sweets and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Known for its galaktoboureko and baklava, the shop became a cultural landmark, drawing generations of Greek Australians and locals alike.

The closure of International Cakes in 2024 marked the end of an era, as it was one of the last Greek-owned businesses in central Melbourne. Batzogiannis, who remained a steady presence behind the counter until the shop’s final days, was remembered as a quiet yet vital pillar of the community. “Bill brought joy to generations through his warm hospitality and unforgettable desserts,” the Greek Community of Melbourne said in a heartfelt statement. “He was a sweet soul behind one of Lonsdale Street’s most iconic establishments.”

The shop served as more than just a bakery—it was a gathering place where families, journalists, community leaders, and newly arrived migrants connected over coffee and pastries. Batzogiannis’ legacy is one of resilience and community spirit, embodying the story of Greek immigration to Australia.

His funeral is set for Monday, July 14, 2025, where the community will gather to honor his life and contributions. The loss of Batzogiannis follows other recent deaths in the Australian Greek community, including community leader Nick Trandos, 90, and Crete veteran Vicky Zemenides, further deepening the sense of mourning among Greek Australians.
