Lonely Planet Founder Unveils Kea: Greece’s Hidden Island Gem

Kea

Tony Wheeler, co-founder of Lonely Planet, has spotlighted a Greek island that has escaped the overtourism plaguing destinations like Santorini and Mykonos. Kea, the northernmost island in the Cyclades, offers a serene retreat for travelers seeking authenticity, according to Wheeler’s recent exploration.

In 1973, Wheeler and his wife Maureen embarked on a transformative journey from London to Australia, publishing Across Asia On The Cheap, which sold 1,500 copies in its first week and birthed Lonely Planet. Now, 52 years later, Wheeler’s latest discovery highlights Kea’s unspoiled charm, frequented mainly by Athenians escaping city life.

Unlike Santorini, which sees 3.4 million visitors annually for its 20,000 residents, prompting a €20 (£17.33) daily cruise ship tax from June to September, Kea remains a quiet haven. “It’s reassuring to find places where overtourism hasn’t taken hold,” Wheeler noted.

Kea’s Attractions
Kea’s beaches, like Xyla with its golden sands and shimmering Aegean waters, rival Santorini’s iconic shores without the crowds. Pisses offers ample sun loungers, while Spathi provides a secluded escape. History buffs can explore the 20-meter Agia Marina Tower, built from local slate and marble, and the 6th-century BC Lion of Ioulida overlooking the island’s capital. The Kea Folklore Museum, housed in an 1845 building, displays local artifacts and hosts summer events like the Fairy Tales Festival.

Travel Logistics
With no airport, Kea retains its off-the-radar appeal. Travelers can fly to Athens International from London (Luton, Stansted, or Gatwick, ~4 hours) and catch a one-hour ferry from Lavrio for €14 (£12.13), a quicker and cheaper alternative to Mykonos’ two-hour trip.

Best Time to Visit
Kea enjoys year-round sunshine, with August averaging 33°C for sun-seekers and October cooling to 24°C. Winter visitors can expect 15°C in February and 17°C in March, ideal for a tranquil getaway.

For travelers craving an authentic Greek island experience, Kea offers a rare escape from the tourist throngs.
