Migration and Asylum Minister Thanos Plevris on Wednesday underlined the government’s hardline stance on irregular migration during a visit to the Pre-Departure Detention Centre for Migrants (PROKEKA) in Amygdaleza.
The visit came ahead of a parliamentary vote on the government’s new migration bill.
Plevris toured the facility, was briefed on registration and identification procedures, and met with staff members and police officers serving at the centre.
Following his visit, he stated:
“Under the new framework, for those who remain illegally in the country, there will be two options: prison or return. It is crucial that everyone in the facility is fully informed so that returns can increase. Our goal is to significantly accelerate return procedures, sending a clear message: anyone who is illegally in Greece cannot stay.”
He also praised the efforts of law enforcement and ministry staff, noting their role in “fighting an important battle on many fronts, especially in tackling illegal migration,” and pledged continued support from the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.
The Amygdaleza visit is part of a wider initiative by the ministry to inspect reception facilities across Greece. On Thursday, August 21, Plevris is scheduled to visit the island of Samos.
