Activists Unfurl Palestinian Flag on Iconic Meteora Cliff

A large Palestinian flag has been unfurled on one of the iconic rock formations of Meteora, overlooking the town of Kalambaka, in an unexpected act of political symbolism that has drawn national and international attention.

According to local reports, a group of activists from across Greece climbed one of Meteora’s steep cliffs to install the 4-by-10-metre flag, which can now be clearly seen from the city below. Residents spotted it early in the morning, expressing surprise at how the group managed to access such an inaccessible location.

The activists said their aim was to send a message of solidarity with Palestine, stating that the flag was meant to be visible to Israeli tourists who frequently visit Meteora. A video circulated online, filmed by drone, includes the message: “Stop the Genocide – Freedom for Palestine.”

Images and footage of the act were shared with select media outlets and posted on social media, quickly gaining traction. The group behind the action stated that removing the flag would not be an easy task, given its placement on a sheer rock face requiring advanced climbing skills and specialized equipment.

The flag’s appearance has sparked a wave of online reactions, with supporters praising the symbolic gesture and critics condemning the politicization of one of Greece’s most famous UNESCO World Heritage sites.

According to sources close to the organizers, the flag will remain in place until the group decides to retrieve it for future pro-Palestine actions.
