Herodion to Close for Three Years for Major Restoration Work

Following the conclusion of the 2025 Athens Festival, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus — one of Athens’ most iconic landmarks — will close its doors for approximately three years to undergo essential maintenance and restoration.

The Ministry of Culture announced that the ancient theatre, which hosts the city’s most prestigious cultural events, has shown signs of wear and deterioration that require immediate attention. The restoration works will be undertaken by the Directorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities to ensure the long-term preservation and safety of the monument.

Located beneath the Acropolis, the Herodion has been a premier venue for performances since its reconstruction in the 1950s. The temporary closure is expected to protect its structural integrity and allow it to continue welcoming audiences for generations to come.
