A 31-year-old Ukrainian crew member was rescued by the Greek Coast Guard on Monday after falling overboard from a Liberian-flagged cargo ship in the Aegean Sea.
The incident occurred in the early hours of November 3 in waters between Amorgos, Naxos, Antiparos, and Ios. Port authorities in the region were alerted by the Hellenic Coast Guard’s Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center.
A coordinated search operation was launched immediately, involving three coast guard patrol boats and three nearby vessels. The seafarer was located south of Iraklia in good health and recovered by coast guard personnel.
He was taken to the port of Naxos and transferred by ambulance to Naxos General Hospital, where he remains under observation.
The vessel’s name has not been disclosed. A preliminary investigation is underway by the Naxos Port Authority.
