US President Donald Trump has said he takes a higher daily dose of aspirin than his doctors recommend, attributing visible bruises on his right hand to the medication.
In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Trump said his doctors would prefer him to take a lower dose, but he has been taking the higher dosage for years. “They would rather I take the lower dose. I take the higher dose … and it causes bruising,” said Trump, 79, the oldest US president ever elected.
The president also dismissed suggestions that he falls asleep during public events.
Trump explained that he takes aspirin daily because of its blood-thinning properties. “They say aspirin is good for thinning the blood, and I don’t want thick blood flowing to my heart. I want nice, thin blood flowing to my heart. Does that make sense?” he said, justifying his daily intake of 325 milligrams of aspirin.
According to the Mayo Clinic, which was cited by The Wall Street Journal, a low-dose aspirin regimen typically consists of 81 milligrams per day.
