Former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has condemned Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ support for the US military operation in Venezuela and the capture of the country’s President Nicolás Maduro on Saturday, describing the action as a “blatant violation of international law.”
Tsipras, widely expected to launch a new political party after leading a leftist SYRIZA government from 2015 to 2019, called Mitsotakis’ comment that “now is not the time to comment on the legality of the recent action” unacceptable.
“The year 2026 begins with an unprecedented, blatant violation of international law and a harsh reminder that it has now been largely replaced by the law of the strong,” Tsipras said, adding that the move sets a dangerous precedent. “Let’s not be mistaken: the real aim of the US is not the quality of democracy in Venezuela but control over its oil reserves,” he continued.
Referring to Europe, Tsipras noted: “In the face of recent developments, Europe now appears powerless to play a meaningful international role.”
On Saturday evening, Mitsotakis commented that the “end of the Maduro regime offers new hope for the country,” adding that “priority must now be to ensure a peaceful and speedy transition to a new, inclusive government that enjoys full democratic legitimacy.”
Leaders around the world have responded with a mix of condemnation and support for the US operation that captured Maduro.
