Cyprus Presidency Denounces Circulating Video as 'Malicious' Fake

Nicosia, Cyprus – The Cypriot presidency has strongly rejected a video spreading on X (formerly Twitter) as a malicious fabrication, amid calls from opposition leaders for transparency and investigations.

Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis announced on Thursday that preliminary checks by state authorities confirmed the video was manipulated through editing (montage) and contained false, misleading statements intended to damage the government's reputation and Cyprus' international image.

The controversial video, uploaded on Thursday by an X account under the name "Emily Thompson," has sparked significant political backlash. It allegedly features edited clips of private conversations involving former Energy Minister George Lakkotrypis, Charalambos Charalambous (director of the president's office), and Cyfield Group CEO Georgios Chrysochos.

Reports cited in the video suggest discussions about bypassing campaign financing limits during the 2023 presidential election, including references to a €1 million cap and the occasional use of cash for excess contributions. Other segments reportedly touch on access channels to the presidential palace and close personal ties to President Nikos Christodoulides.

Leaders from various political parties have demanded clear explanations, emphasizing citizens' right to accountability amid the uproar.

Authorities are examining the incident, with some sources raising the possibility of hybrid threats targeting the Republic of Cyprus. Former Minister Lakkotrypis has filed a complaint with police, describing the video as deliberately distorted and posted by a fake account.
