Greek Thermal Tourism Reinvents Itself with Loutraki at Forefront

Greece’s thermal tourism sector is undergoing a significant transformation, shifting from a traditionally therapeutic model aimed mainly at older visitors to a modern experience focused on leisure, wellness, and thematic travel that increasingly attracts younger audiences.

This evolving profile of Greek thermal tourism was highlighted by Markos Danas, Secretary General of the Association of Thermal Springs of Greece, during the conference titled “Thermalism and Destinations: The Next Day of Greek Thermal Tourism”, held as part of the 12th Athens International Tourism and Culture Expo at the Zappeion Megaron.

According to industry data presented at the event, Greece is home to approximately 750 natural thermal water outflows, 85 officially recognized thermal springs, and 32 licensed operating facilities. Annual admissions to thermal centers have recovered to around one million visits. Today’s visitors are typically younger, travel more frequently during autumn, winter, and spring, stay between one and three days, and seek contemporary wellness services, high standards of cleanliness, quality gastronomy, flexible booking options, and experience-based packages.

Visitors increasingly look for varied water temperatures, spa treatments, and visually engaging experiences suitable for social media sharing—an element that is reshaping how destinations market themselves.

Loutraki as a Model Wellness Destination

At the heart of this shift is Loutraki, a municipality that has recorded steady growth in visitor numbers in recent years. According to Deputy Mayor for Tourism of Loutraki–Perachora–Agioi Theodoroi, Anastasios Sakellariou, the tourism season has expanded significantly, now running from March through November.

Indicative of this upward trend is record traffic at the local information kiosk. In 2025, 14,000 visitors were recorded in April and 15,631 in September, marking a 56 percent increase compared to the same months in 2024.

Loutraki is also attracting growing interest from international visitors. While arrivals from the Russian market have declined, this gap has been offset by tourists from the United States, France, Spain, Germany, and Poland, alongside domestic visitors from Athens, which remains the destination’s largest visitor base.

The municipality has strategically invested in the wellness–culture–sea model. With a beach located directly within the city, an extensive coastline spanning Schinos, Perachora, Agioi Theodoroi, and Isthmia, and access to thematic trails, Loutraki combines seaside tourism with thermal experiences. The destination also boasts a strong cultural identity, including a renowned philharmonic orchestra, gastronomic festivals, and sports tourism activities.

Infrastructure, Investment, and Long-Term Vision

Municipal thermal facilities operating under the “Loutraki Thermal Spa” brand are being strengthened through infrastructure and service investments, with further enhancements planned for 2026. At the same time, the municipality is completing the redevelopment of the coastal front and advancing plans for a unified recreational coastal axis extending to the Loutraki waterfalls.

In parallel, the historic Springs building is being repurposed into an interactive thermal water museum, aiming to enrich the visitor experience and highlight the area’s thermal heritage.

A key factor in Loutraki’s development strategy is the close cooperation between the municipality, the Chamber of Commerce, and tourism businesses, which function as a unified planning and vision center. The stated goal, according to Sakellariou, is to establish Loutraki as “the wellness and thermal destination of Greece,” offering a vibrant and welcoming environment where water, culture, and people coexist in harmony.
