Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has postponed his trip to Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting 2026, due to the ongoing severe weather conditions battering Greece.

The decision comes amid intense storms causing widespread disruptions, including strong winds, heavy rainfall, ferry cancellations, school closures, and emergency alerts via 112 in regions like Attica. Government sources emphasize the need to maintain close coordination on the domestic crisis before the prime minister travels abroad.

Mitsotakis is expected to depart as soon as weather conditions safely permit, ensuring full oversight of the situation at home. He will participate in key sessions at the Davos forum, where over 60 heads of state — including U.S. President Donald Trump, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and others — are addressing global economic and geopolitical challenges.

From Davos, the Greek prime minister will head directly to Brussels on Thursday midday for an emergency European Council summit focused on the escalating Greenland situation. The meeting, called by European Council President António Costa, responds to recent U.S. statements regarding potential changes to Greenland's status — viewed by EU leaders as a potential threat to NATO unity and transatlantic relations.

Mitsotakis has already warned that any unilateral attempt to alter Greenland's status quo would be "catastrophic" and a direct challenge to the alliance.

This delay highlights the balancing act Greece's leadership faces: managing domestic emergencies while engaging in high-stakes international diplomacy amid rising Europe–U.S. tensions.
