Athens, Greece — Intense weather phenomena have battered Greece in recent hours, with heavy rainfall causing serious disruptions across many areas, particularly in Attica.

Roads in several spots have turned into raging rivers, and images circulating on social media highlight the extreme danger of the situation. Among those who stepped up to document and assist during the chaos was popular Greek singer Panos Kalidis.
The well-known artist shared videos from Ano Glyfada, revealing how the downpour had triggered severe flooding in the neighbourhood. Footage shows streets submerged in deep water, making travel extremely difficult and hazardous for drivers and pedestrians alike.
However, Panos Kalidis did not stop at simply recording the events. According to his wife, Leanna Markoglou, the singer drove his jeep onto the flooded roads of Ano Glyfada to help people trapped or struggling to move amid the fast-flowing waters. In one widely shared clip, a woman can be seen waving gratefully to the camera from inside the singer's vehicle.
Tragic Incident in the Same Area
Just hours earlier, a heartbreaking tragedy unfolded in the very same neighbourhood: a woman lost her life after being swept away by the torrential waters. Reports indicate she was a pedestrian struck by a vehicle that had been carried along by the flood. Emergency services, including the Fire Brigade and EKAB ambulance crews, rushed to the scene for a rescue operation, but despite their efforts, the woman was recovered without vital signs and pronounced dead.
The severe storm has caused widespread chaos in southern Athens suburbs like Glyfada, Vouliagmeni, Voula, and Vari, with vehicles swept away, rubbish bins overturned, and residents calling for help. Authorities continue to urge caution as the bad weather persists.
In southern Greece's Peloponnese peninsula, a Coast Guard officer lost his life after being swept away by strong waves at the port of Astros Kynourias and sustaining serious head injuries, according to local officials.
Panos Kalidis' actions have been praised online as a shining example of community solidarity in the face of adversity.
