A devastating fire has razed a multi-million-dollar community hall adjacent to the Greek Orthodox Parish of St. Elias in Croydon Park, Adelaide, but firefighters heroically saved the iconic 50-year-old church and a nearby nursing home from the flames.

The blaze erupted on Regency Road, engulfing the hall in intense fire and thick smoke that billowed into the sky, visible from afar. Emergency services, including the Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS), responded swiftly to the scene, battling the inferno for hours to prevent it from spreading to the neighboring structures.

According to reports from 7NEWS Adelaide, the fire destroyed the community hall completely, leaving behind a charred skeleton of the building that had served as a vital gathering place for the local Greek community. Dramatic footage showed flames leaping high, with firefighters using aerial ladders and hoses to combat the fire from multiple angles.

MFS Commander Phil Ross described the efforts to contain the blaze: "Our crews worked tirelessly to protect the church and the nursing home. It was a challenging fire, but we managed to save those key buildings."

The Greek Orthodox church itself, known for its distinctive blue domes and intricate interior icons, emerged unscathed, much to the relief of parishioners. Aerial views captured the stark contrast between the smoldering ruins of the hall and the intact church standing nearby.

Church Board President Vladimir Devrelis expressed gratitude to the firefighters and vowed to rebuild. "This hall was the heart of our community events, weddings, and gatherings. It's a huge loss, but we are committed to rebuilding it stronger than before. Our faith and community will guide us through this."

The neighboring nursing home was also spared, with no injuries reported among residents or staff. Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, which remains unknown at this time. No casualties were reported in the incident.

The Greek community in Adelaide has rallied in support, with messages of solidarity pouring in. The parish, established over five decades ago, plays a central role in preserving Greek heritage and traditions in South Australia.

As cleanup begins, the focus shifts to recovery and reconstruction. Devrelis added, "We will come together as a community to rebuild what was lost. This is not the end; it's a new beginning."
