European Parliament Blocks AI on Work-Issued Devices Over Cybersecurity Fears

European Parliament VALERIO FABBRI goods

The European Parliament has decided to disable artificial intelligence (AI) features on work-issued devices used by its members and staff, citing cybersecurity risks, according to a report by Politico.

Parliament officials said many AI tools rely on cloud-based services to operate, transmitting data to external servers that may be located outside institutional networks. This data flow raised concerns about potential security vulnerabilities and unauthorized access to sensitive information.

In addition to restricting AI features on official devices, the Parliament advised members and staff to exercise caution when using personal devices for work-related purposes and to apply similar security precautions.

The move comes as the European Union continues to tighten its data protection and cybersecurity policies, amid broader concerns about reliance on foreign technology providers and the risks associated with cross-border data transfers.

The Parliament has previously taken similar measures. In 2023, it banned the use of TikTok on work-issued devices over security concerns.
