An Iranian-made Shahed drone struck the runway of the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force base at RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, in what officials described as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the facility’s operational capability.
The attack occurred in the early hours of Monday, March 2. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper confirmed that the drone was aimed specifically at the base’s landing strip but declined to disclose further operational details.
Precautionary Measures Underway
The UK Ministry of Defence has begun relocating families from the base as a precaution, part of wider efforts to tighten security arrangements.
“We are not in a position to give more information or detail at this stage, but clearly all precautionary measures are being taken around the base,” Cooper said.
Second Drone Intercepted; Unverified Footage Circulates
Authorities reported that a second drone was intercepted before reaching its intended target. At the same time, unverified video circulating on social media appears to capture the moment of the explosion, though the footage has not yet been independently authenticated.
Wider Impact on Local Community
Following the incident, non-essential personnel were evacuated from RAF Akrotiri. Some residents in nearby communities also chose to leave the area, and schools in surrounding districts have been closed as a safety measure. Developments continue to be monitored by newsit.gr.
EU Commission Expresses Solidarity
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen issued a statement after speaking with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
Von der Leyen noted that while the Republic of Cyprus was not the intended target, the incident carries significant implications for European security.
“I had a conversation with President Christodoulides, who briefed me on the incident that occurred just after midnight, when an unmanned aircraft targeted the British base in Akrotiri,” she said. “Although Cyprus was not the target, I want to be clear: We stand collectively, firmly and unequivocally alongside our member states against any threat.”
