Move over, pasta—Greek food is becoming a new favorite in Australian kitchens as more people look for fresh dinner ideas.
With grocery prices rising and Greek cooking being simple, many Aussies are turning to traditional Greek recipes, which often require fewer, more affordable ingredients, according to the Daily Telegraph.
Taste.com.au‘s Taste the World survey revealed that Australians are eager to explore new cuisines, with Greek food topping the list of dishes they’d like to cook more often.
Mary and Martha Kalifatidis, a mother-daughter duo, are helping make Greek cooking more accessible with their popular online videos, where they share beloved family recipes.

They understand why Greek food is gaining popularity. “Greek food is all about bold flavors, fresh ingredients, and sharing meals with loved ones—something Aussies can relate to,” they said. “We love entertaining, and Greek food is simple but flavorful. It’s comforting yet fresh and vibrant, perfectly fitting with the Aussie lifestyle.”
Despite the growing interest, survey participants noted that the cost of ingredients often discourages them from trying new cuisines. To address this, Taste is introducing new global recipes to boost cooking skills while keeping costs low.
“We want everyone to be able to make these easy and accessible recipes,” said Marina Karris, Senior Content Producer at Taste, promoting Greek recipes for the campaign.
One of the standout recipes is Mary’s spinach pie. “There’s nothing better than watching people take that first crunchy bite and seeing their face light up,” Mary shared.
These recipes will be available on taste.com.au on Tuesday, March 25, just in time for Greek Independence Day.
Three generations of Greek cooks gathered at CERES Community Environment Park for a family photo to celebrate the day, symbolizing the deep bond between food and heritage.
“Cooking is a love language in Greek families. Even when we argue in the kitchen, we always end up laughing over a plate of something delicious,” Martha said.
