Celebrated author Victoria Hislop is set to return to Chios, embarking on another creative exploration of the Northern Aegean island’s rich tapestry of culture, history, and folklore.
Hislop’s connection with Chios began when she visited as a guest of North Aegean Regional Governor Konstantinos Moutzouris, speaking at the Chios Festival 2024 (August 28–September 6). There, she immersed herself in the island’s heritage, delivering a poignant address at the former Lobotomy hospital—a site steeped in Chios’ past—that captivated attendees and deepened her bond with the island.

Known for her evocative storytelling and passion for Greece, Hislop is drawn back to Chios to uncover more of its unique character and bring its stories to a global audience. Governor Moutzouris noted, “Her festival speech forged a profound link with Chios’ history, inspiring her to dive further into its cultural depths.”
Hislop’s return coincides with her recent appointment as the first female honorary member of the Hellenic Authors’ Society, a prestigious group established in 1981 to champion Greek writers. Moutzouris congratulated her, saying, “With millions of readers worldwide, Victoria Hislop is returning to Chios to fuel her next literary creations.”
Her international bestseller The Island, translated into 30 languages and adapted into a hit Greek TV series, exemplifies her ability to spotlight Greek locales. Moutzouris expressed delight at Chios featuring in her work, crediting her 2024 festival visit for sparking this renewed interest.
He emphasized the broader impact: “Such visits elevate the Northern Aegean’s global profile, showcasing our islands’ cultural wealth.”
