ATHENS, GREECE – On Thursday, April 10, 2025, the Hellenic Air Force (HAF) took a significant step toward preserving its aviation heritage by signing an agreement with the “IKAROS” Public Benefit Foundation. The deal, formalized by Lieutenant General (Pilot) Dimosthenis Grigoriadis, Chief of the HAF General Staff, and a representative of the Foundation, involves the free transfer of two historic aircraft—a C-47A and a De Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth—for full restoration.

The ambitious project aims not only to refurbish these iconic planes but also, if technically feasible, to return them to airworthy condition. The restoration process will unfold in phases: the C-47A will undergo initial work in Greece before being completed at a specialized facility in the United Kingdom, while the Tiger Moth will be restored entirely in the UK.

The “IKAROS” Foundation will cover all expenses related to the restoration, as well as the training of two HAF pilots and two technicians to operate and maintain the aircraft. This financial commitment ensures no cost to the Hellenic Air Force, underscoring the Foundation’s dedication to preserving Greece’s aviation legacy.

The agreement spans four years, starting from the delivery of each aircraft. Restoration is expected to take three years, with the final year dedicated to test flights and participation in international air shows. During these events, the aircraft will proudly display the Hellenic Air Force’s national insignia and colors, showcasing Greece’s storied aviation history on a global stage. All logistics and costs for these activities will be handled by the Foundation.

Upon completion of the agreement, the fully restored aircraft will be returned to the Hellenic Air Force at no cost, ready to serve as enduring symbols of Greece’s military and cultural heritage.

The Hellenic Air Force expressed deep gratitude to Mr. Peter Livanos, President of the “IKAROS” Foundation, for his selfless contribution. “This partnership is a testament to our shared commitment to honoring the past while inspiring future generations,” said an HAF spokesperson.

The restoration of the C-47A and De Havilland DH.82 Tiger Moth is poised to captivate aviation enthusiasts and historians alike, ensuring that these historic aircraft continue to soar as proud relics of Greece’s aviation legacy.
