Charlotte Tilbury’s Popular Beauty Product Features a Greek Island Secret

In the world of beauty, few products have achieved the cult status of Charlotte Tilbury’s Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray. Beloved for its lightweight, hydrating mist that locks makeup in place for hours, the formula boasts more than just staying power—it carries within it an ancient ingredient with deep Mediterranean roots: mastic, a resin derived from the bark of the mastic tree native to the Greek island of Chios.

The popular beauty product is a cult favourite, worn by celebrities and beauty influencers across the globe. From red carpets to YouTube tutorials and TikTok GRWMs, it has earned a reputation for delivering a poreless, airbrushed finish that lasts from day to night.

The mastic tree (Pistacia lentiscus), found almost exclusively on the southern part of Chios, has been treasured for thousands of years. Known in Greece as "mastiha," this aromatic resin has been harvested in the same traditional way since antiquity—by carefully making incisions in the bark to let the resin slowly drip and harden into precious droplets known as "tears."

Historically prized for its therapeutic, culinary, and cosmetic properties, mastic was once worth more than its weight in gold. Used by the ancient Greeks and Romans in perfumes, skin salves, and digestive remedies, it’s no surprise that modern skincare has rediscovered its power.

Mastic Gum: an aromatic resin from the bark of a tree grown on the Greek Island of Chios which helps to keep pores clear.

Mastic is celebrated for its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties, making it a natural choice for skincare. When used in a setting spray like Charlotte Tilbury’s, mastic extract helps tighten pores, calm the skin, and extend the longevity of makeup without irritation or heaviness. It offers a naturally mattifying finish, making it ideal for controlling shine while nourishing the skin underneath.

In detail, the lightweight oil-free setting spray claims to lock down your favourite makeup look, helping to both prime and set your makeup for up to 16 hours. The unique formula creates a weightless veil of hydration over the skin for a flawless and smoothing effect. It can be used over foundation, concealer, bronzer and powder without any creasing, melting or fading. It's worth mentioning that the product is made without alcohol, gluten, parabens and sulphates (SLS & SLES).

The inclusion of mastic resin in Charlotte Tilbury’s formula, adds a layer of authenticity and elegance to the brand’s commitment to fusing science with ancient beauty rituals. Each spray of the global-glam-Greek-gem, is not just a finishing touch—it’s a connection to a time-honoured tradition from a sun-drenched Greek island, where mastic cultivation is protected by UNESCO and passed down through generations.

Make-up mogul Charlotte Tilbury's Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray featuring Chios mastic, bridges ancient wisdom with modern glamour.

Greece is famous for the production of mastiha, or mastic, a tree resin collected from mastic trees that flourish in the distinct climate of Chios. Just 1 kilogram can retail for about $350. Today, it's known as "white gold" for its presumed health benefits and various uses in gum, cosmetics, and food. But harvesting this resin isn't simple. It requires farmers to first hurt the trees with as many as 600 cuts into each one's bark. It's only after each droplet has been collected by hand that the resin can be turned into products used around the world. Watch video:
