Greek Schools to Celebrate EOKA Day for the First Time

On April 1, 2025, Cyprus commemorates 70 years since the EOKA liberation struggle began in 1955. The centerpiece event, “70 Years of EOKA, 70 Years of Uninterrupted Light,” starts at 4 PM at the “Tassos Papadopoulos – Eleftheria” gymnasium, with President Christodoulides in attendance and live coverage on RIK2. Morning events include a 10:00 AM service at the Cathedral of Apostle Barnabas and an 11:00 AM memorial at the Imprisoned Graves, both led by Archbishop George.

Today, April 1, 2025, marks 70 years since the start of the EOKA liberation struggle, celebrated with events across Cyprus. The highlight, “70 Years of EOKA, 70 Years of Uninterrupted Light,” will take place at 4 PM in the “Tassos Papadopoulos – Eleftheria” gymnasium, attended by President Christodoulides and broadcast live on RIK2. Earlier, Archbishop George will lead a ceremonial service at 10:00 AM at the Cathedral of Apostle Barnabas and a memorial at 11:00 AM at the Imprisoned Graves.

Savvas Rotsidis: Hero of the Cypriot-EOKA struggle against British colonial rule

Savvas Rotsidis (1935 – November 25, 1958), from the village of Mammari near Nicosia, was a dedicated member of EOKA, the Greek-Cypriot nationalist organization that fought for the liberation of Cyprus from British colonial rule and its eventual union with Greece. An accountant by profession, Rotsidis joined EOKA in 1955 and took part in numerous operations against British forces. Captured by the British in 1958, he was tortured but refused to betray his comrades. He was executed on November 25, 1958, becoming a martyr in the struggle for Cyprus’s independence.

Cyprus President Christodoulides to Attend Memorial Events in Thessaloniki on November 1

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides will visit Thessaloniki on November 1 to participate in memorial events honouring Cypriot history and Greek-Cypriot ties. His visit includes the unveiling of a bust of EOKA hero Kyriakos Matsis, a memorial for victims of the Cyprus conflict, and a keynote address at the “Cyprus & Romiosyni” congress, which celebrates shared heritage and historical connections between Cyprus and Greece.
