Citizens to Switch Energy Providers via Gov.gr Wallet, Says Digital Governance Minister Papastergiou
Greece’s Digital Governance Minister, Dimitris Papastergiou, announced that citizens will soon be able to switch energy providers through the Gov.gr Wallet. This user-friendly system, expected to launch in the coming days, will allow citizens to provide consent via a notification from their current provider. At an event by the Hellenic-Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Papastergiou highlighted upcoming opportunities in environmental sustainability and technology collaboration between Greece and Spain, as well as the importance of adopting European data governance regulations.
Greece has streamlined the process for issuing new identity cards, allowing citizens to submit documents at any Security Service, regardless of their residence. Introduced by Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis, the new system aims to reduce bureaucracy, save time, and offer more flexibility. Citizens can now schedule digital appointments via the id.gov.gr platform, and the new ID cards will be issued within seven days.
The Gov.gr Wallet has been awarded “Digital Transformation of the Year” by the World Innovation, Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA) at its annual conference in Armenia. This top honour recognises the General Secretariat for Information Systems and Digital Governance’s efforts to enhance digital services in the public sector, accepted by General Secretary Dimosthenis Anagnostopoulos.

With the deadline looming for mandatory use at stadiums, downloads of the Gov.gr wallet app have surged in Greece. Over 100,000 citizens have downloaded the app in the last month, adding to the nearly 2 million who’ve already embraced this digital future.
