MRF Tyres is an Indian multinational tyre manufacturer and the largest tyre manufacturer in India. It is headquartered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and the name is abbreviated from the company's early days when it was called Madras Rubber Factory.

MRF Limited has emerged as the second-strongest tyre manufacturer globally with the AAA brand.

Balloon manufacturing unit

MRF was started by KM Mammen Mappillai in 1946 as a toy balloon manufacturing unit at Tiruvottiyur, Madras (now Chennai). In 1952, the company ventured into rubber tread manufacturing.

Madras Rubber Factory Limited was established as a private company in November 1960, and it ventured into tyre manufacturing in collaboration with Mansfield Tire & Rubber, which is based in Ohio, United States.

The company went public on April 1, 1961, and an office was established in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1964 to develop the export market. In 1967, it became the first Indian company to export tyres to the US.

Nylon tyres

In 1973, MRF started manufacturing Nylon tyres for the first time. In 1978, the company entered into a technical know-how partnership with BF Goodrich. Mansfield Tire & Rubber Co. sold its stake in 1979, and the company name was changed to MRF Ltd.

The company has completed a technical collaboration agreement with Marangoni TRS SPA, Italy, to manufacture hardened rubber treads for the retread industry. The Indian company supplied tyres for the Maruti 800, South Asia's first modern small car.

In 1989, the company partnered with Hasbro International, the world's largest toy manufacturer, and launched Funskool India. They also signed an agreement with Australia's Vapocure to manufacture polyurethane paint formulations and with the Italian tyre manufacturer Pirelli to manufacture conveyor belts and elevators.
