Greece needs Europe’s tangible support against the migration pressures at its borders and Turkey’s tolerance of traffickers, Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos said in Luxembourg on Friday.
Theodorikakos made the doorstep statements as he arrived for the meeting of interior and security ministers of the European Union.
“The great migration pressures that Greece is experiencing at its borders and continued tolerance of traffickers demonstrated by Turkey constitute a threat for all of Europe,” he said, stressing that “they undermine its internal security and clearly violate international law.”
The Greek minister added, “We effectively protect Greece’s borders, which are also Europe’s borders, in line with international law, against the instrumentalisation of human lives. We now need Europe’s tangible support and cooperation from all our partners. In a period marked by turbulence and threats internationally, the big European family needs to serve, once again, as a pillar of stability, security and solidarity. Thus proving that its values remain strong, stable and non-negotiable.”
