Controversy Surrounds Disney's Atatürk Series for Glorifying a "Genocidal Killer"

The show in question is the forthcoming Disney Atatürk Series. It’s a historical piece slated for release on October 29, coinciding with the centennial anniversary of the Republic of Turkey.

In an era of cultural sensitivity and global awareness, Disney has come under fire for its upcoming series, the Disney Atatürk Series. A prominent Armenian-American committee accused the entertainment giant of glorifying a "dictator and genocide killer." However, Turkish media has dismissed these claims as reactionary, arguing against censorship and defending the show.

The contentious opinions surrounding the series have sparked debates about cultural appropriation versus cultural appreciation. It is challenging to assess the show's true nature without viewing it entirely.

Further concerns have arisen over the reported casting of Emma Watson, adding to the alarm.

The Armenian genocide occurred between 1915 and 1923 under the Ottoman Empire and is a historical backdrop for the controversy. While 34 countries officially recognize the genocide, Turkey and Azerbaijan deny its occurrence.

“Disney, a children’s channel, should not glorify Kemal Ataturk, a racist, genocidal dictator responsible for the deaths of countless Christians and Kurds. Teach peace, not hate,” ANCA said.

The dispute extends beyond television, affecting ongoing diplomatic relations between Armenia and Turkey and their respective international communities. Amidst the calls for change, Disney has not indicated any intention to halt the show.
