Maria Callas Museum: Festive activities and free entry for the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great diva

With a necessary pre-booking, the Maria Callas Museum of the Municipality of Athens honours the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great diva of opera on Saturday, December 2, with free entry and a rich program of celebratory events.

The 100 years since the birth of Maria Callas is an event that has been included in the UNESCO list of anniversaries for 2023, and the residents and visitors of Athens will have the opportunity to celebrate it through free activities offered by the Maria Callas Museum throughout the day.

The Maria Callas Museum of the Municipality of Athens will be open for visitors from 10 am to 12 midnight with free entry and advance reservation through more. At the same time, it offers a rich program with educational activities for families with children aged 5-12, guided tours in English, and thematic guided tours by the members of its scientific team.

The actions will culminate with a 50s-60s celebration street event on Petraki Street (behind the Maria Callas Museum).

Kosmos 93.6 and the "Kosmopolitan" of the morning zone Leonidas Antonopoulos and Yiannis Dimitriadis choose the music and create a unique atmosphere that will revive the sound and the successes of the era that Maria Kallas measured and sealed with her voice and presence: the 1950s and 1960s—those there will watch a different DJ set with many surprises and unexpected appearances. At the same time, cocktails inspired by her favourite drink will be served at the Maria Callas Museum.

Educational program for families with children aged 5-12

How many different costumes of the great opera soprano can be in the museum collection? Where could her favourite mirror be hiding? What do you mean there are cards with Maria Callas? The museum's exhibits inspire us to discover the life and art of the opera diva by exploring her objects and transforming ourselves into artists to create our own exhibition about Maria Callas.

12.00 & 18.00 – Tour in English (EN)

The specialised staff of the Maria Callas Museum will conduct a free guided tour in English for those visitors who want to learn more about the career and life of Maria Callas.

Point of View: Thematic guided tours (GR)

13:00 Despina Andriopoulou, Museum Manager. Through a tour of the exhibition, emphasis will be placed on the collection and interpretations of objects related to the performing arts.

15:00 Andromachi Gazi, Professor Panteion University, museologist/ member of the Maria Kallas Museum project team. Andromachi Gazi will explain the reasoning, goals and main axes of the museological study for the MMK, as well as the challenges posed by the management of a myth in the environment of a modern museum

17:00 Erato Koutsoudaki-Gerolymbou, Architect Museologist/member of the Maria Callas Museum project team. The designer of the MMK permanent exhibition will guide visitors through the prism of her relationship with the diva, built over the ten years of her engagement with the project, revealing little secrets of the exhibition and discussing her sources of inspiration.

19:00 Alexandros Harkiolakis is a musicologist/director of the Friends of Music Association/Maria Callas Museum project team member. The tour will focus on Maria Callas' interpretive abilities, which, combined with her melodramatic skills, changed the opera world forever.

18:30 – 04:00 50's-60's Celebration Street Event
