Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis received an unexpected and contentious welcome during his recent visit to Canada, as a pro-Palestinian activist seized the opportunity to confront him over Greece's stance on the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Organisers of the Prime Minister's visit had aimed to provide a hospitable environment, but their efforts were overshadowed by the activist's bold actions. The activist, advocating for Palestinian rights and freedom, denounced the Greek government's response to the tragic events unfolding in Gaza, particularly in light of the Israeli bombing and the staggering loss of Palestinian civilian lives.

"While the government of Greece has supported a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, its blatant complicity in the genocide of Palestinians says otherwise," the activist remarked. Pointing to Greece's substantial investments with Israel and Elbit Systems, the activist accused Greece of turning a blind eye to the suffering of innocent civilians, emphasising the strengthening ties between the Greek and Israeli military forces.

During the encounter, the activist directly approached Prime Minister Mitsotakis, identifying him by asking, "Are you Mr. Mitsotakis?" After confirming his identity, the activist accused him of complicity in the "genocide of the Palestinians." Mitsotakis, visibly taken aback, responded with disbelief, asking, "Are you serious?"

Undeterred, the activist pressed on, questioning the Prime Minister's lack of advocacy for a ceasefire and urging him to take stronger actions against Israel. "14,000 Palestinian children have been killed," the activist passionately asserted, prompting Mitsotakis to defend Greece's diplomatic efforts in calling for a ceasefire.

However, the activist persisted, demanding to know why Greece hadn't imposed sanctions on Israel or initiated an arms embargo. "You should be ashamed, you have the blood of 14,000 Palestinian children on your hands," the activist exclaimed, labelling Israel as a "terrorist state."

In response, Mitsotakis chose not to engage further, opting to walk away silently from the confrontation.

  1. To the Pro Palestinian activist and to all Muslims who stand with her, who challenged PM Mitsotakis on her perceived lack of support for Palestinians from the Greek Nation and going so far as to label Israel as a terrorist state: where is your outcry against the illegal occupation of Northern Cyprus by Turkey?
