A devastating incident unfolded in Piraeus's Pasalimani district today as a building collapsed, resulting in one death and several injuries. The tragedy occurred at an old building located on Neoria Street, where construction work was underway, according to initial reports from the Fire Department.

A 31-year-old man died after being trapped and crushed by the falling debris. Additionally, three individuals sustained injuries and were promptly transported to nearby hospitals for medical attention.

The deceased victim, identified as a special guard serving with the Rapid Response Unit, was off duty at the time and had volunteered to assist with the construction efforts.

Responding to the emergency, a contingent of 24 firefighters accompanied by 8 vehicles, along with a specialised team from the EMAK fire service equipped with a rescue dog, rushed to the scene to provide assistance.

In the wake of the tragedy, Piraeus Mayor Yannis Mouralis expressed shock and highlighted that the building in question had been issued a permit for minor works. He emphasised the need for a thorough investigation into the nature of the construction interventions, stating, "What interventions were made will be investigated. My own assessment is that half of the building cannot have fallen down due to minor works. We are waiting for an inquest to be held."

Seven individuals, including five workers, the contractor, and the truck driver, have been reportedly arrested in connection with the incident, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
