Athens was named the city with the best… smell in the world!

Millions of people live in cities, there is tons of garbage, and thousands of shops and businesses are in operation. This creates the misconception that big cities smell bad. However, it turns out that Athens smells better than most metropolises!

A recent study by the website HAYPP, which analysed 30 major cities in Europe and beyond, placed Athens at the top of the table for the least smelly city.

Yes, you read that right, the Greek capital is the city with the best smell in the world!

The researchers looked at factors such as cleanliness and the percentage of florists, bakeries and perfume shops to give each city a “smell score”. Therefore, Athens received the best rating (8.3/10) of the 30 cities studied.

According to the survey, the Greek capital is a florist’s paradise, with 31 florists and 22 perfumeries per 10 square kilometres, meaning that a delicate fragrance wafts into every corner of the city.

“Picture this: bustling street markets, the aroma of fresh produce, herbs, and sizzling Greek delicacies wafting through the air. Athens is a feast for the senses, scoring 8.3 out of 10 on the smell-o-meter. From cheesy Tiropita to sticky-sweet Baklava, the city’s bakeries are serving up some serious scent satisfaction,” Time Out outlet wrote.

In second place on the list was Paris, with its romantic atmosphere and elegant boulevards, while the top three were completed by Zurich, which is famous for its cleanliness and picturesque surroundings.
