Greece Posts Unexpected Budget Surplus

The Greek government announced a surprise primary budget surplus of €2.9 billion for the first half of 2024, significantly exceeding its target of €1.2 billion.

The figure also surpasses the €2.1 billion surplus recorded in the same period last year.

The Ministry of National Economy and Finance attributed part of the surplus to factors such as Recovery and Resilience Facility revenues and tax revenue fluctuations. However, the ministry clarified that these factors primarily impact the cash-based calculation and that the fiscal-term primary balance differs.

The announcement marks a positive development for Greece's fiscal health, although experts caution that the full economic picture requires a more comprehensive analysis.
