A wildfire erupted in a forested area of Heraklion, Crete, on Monday afternoon, prompting authorities to issue evacuation orders for residents in four villages as a precautionary measure.
The blaze ignited shortly after 5 p.m. local time, rapidly spreading through dry vegetation. Firefighting crews, including 40 firefighters, two hiking sections, and 14 vehicles, have been deployed to combat the flames, with aerial support from three aircraft.
Residents in Ano Akria, Kato Akria, Moria, and Atsipades have been instructed to evacuate towards Asimi and follow official guidance.
Fire department spokesperson Vassilios Vathrakogiannis stated that firefighters are currently addressing scattered outbreaks. While the fire had initially posed a threat to nearby settlements, its progression has been halted. Dense smoke has been reported due to the burning of primarily agroforestry land.
By 6:30 p.m., Heraklion’s deputy regional governor, Nikos Syrigonakis, confirmed that the fire had been contained but remained active.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities are closely monitoring the wildfire’s development.
