Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, currently in Brussels for official engagements, made a landmark visit on Friday to the Orthodox Centre of the Archdiocese of Belgium, where he met with Metropolitan Athenagoras, the Exarch of the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

This visit marks a historic first, as Mitsotakis is the first Greek prime minister to visit the Orthodox Centre, an institution representing the spiritual and cultural connection between the Orthodox Christian community and the wider European region.

During their meeting, the prime minister and Metropolitan Athenagoras discussed issues concerning the Greek Orthodox diaspora in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg.

Government sources highlighted the significance of the visit, noting that it not only strengthened the relationship between the Greek state and the Orthodox Church abroad but also underscored Greece’s commitment to supporting its diaspora communities.

The meeting reaffirmed the close bonds between the Greek Orthodox Church and the Greek government, with both sides acknowledging the role of the Church in promoting cultural and religious continuity for Greeks abroad.
