German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will attend an event in Thessaloniki on Tuesday, October 29, to mark the progress of the Holocaust Museum of Greece's construction.

The event, organised by the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki, will take place at 13:00 on the museum grounds, located at the corner of Paleo Stathmo and Koletti streets. Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou will also be present.

The Holocaust Museum of Greece is being built to honour the memory of the Jews killed during the Holocaust, including nearly 90% of Thessaloniki's once-thriving Jewish community, who were exterminated in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. The museum will highlight the rich history of Greek Jews and the atrocities of the Holocaust, aiming to preserve memory while promoting peace and justice.

The museum is located at the site of the old railway station, from which Jews were transported to concentration camps. It has been designed by architecture firms from Israel, Germany, and Greece. After the event, President Steinmeier is expected to visit the Goethe Institute to engage with young German speakers.
