Greek Defence Minister Nikos Dendias spent Christmas Day in Alexandroupolis, a city of strategic importance, accompanied by Hellenic Army General Staff Chief Lieutenant General Georgios Kostidis.
The visit began with Dendias attending the Christmas liturgy at the Holy Metropolitan Church of Agios Nikolaos, officiated by His Eminence Metropolitan Anthimos of Alexandroupolis. Following the service, Dendias met with the Metropolitan to exchange holiday greetings.
In the company of Lt. Gen. Stavros Papastathopoulos, commander of the 4th Army Corps “Thrace,” and Lt. Gen. Ioannis Korres, commander of the XII Mechanised Infantry Division “Evros,” Dendias proceeded to the Kipi Bridge, located at Greece’s northeastern border. There, he met with border guards, extending his Christmas wishes and commending their efforts in safeguarding national security.
Speaking from the region, Dendias emphasised Alexandroupolis’ vital role as a hub of geopolitical stability and energy security for the Balkans and the Mediterranean. He reaffirmed Greece’s commitment to international law, maritime regulations, and peaceful coexistence, stating: “Greece stands as a stabilising force, adhering to international norms, avoiding hegemonic aspirations, and respecting the rights of neighbouring nations. At the same time, we remain resolute in defending our sovereignty and sovereign rights.”
The visit underscored Greece’s dedication to regional security and highlighted Alexandroupolis as a critical node in the nation’s defense and energy strategy.
