Pope Francis’ Health Remains Critical as Prayers Continue

Following the Vatican’s confirmation that Pope Francis was in critical condition due to double pneumonia, his health remains fragile, with new concerns over his kidney function.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who received a blood transfusion on Saturday following a severe respiratory crisis, continues to receive intensive medical care at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital.

“The Holy Father’s condition remains serious but stable,” the Vatican reported on Monday. “He has not suffered further respiratory crises, and his medical team is closely monitoring his kidney function, which has shown slight insufficiency but remains under control.”

Doctors continue to express caution, emphasising that the complexity of his condition requires ongoing assessment. The pope’s age and history of lung-related issues, including the removal of part of one lung in his youth due to pleurisy, make his recovery particularly challenging.

Faithful Gather in Prayer for Pope Francis

As concern deepens, pilgrims and the faithful from around the world continue to gather in Vatican City, offering prayers for Pope Francis. Outside Gemelli Hospital, visitors have left flowers and lit candles near a statue of the late Pope John Paul II, who was frequently treated at the facility during his papacy.

“We are all hoping for a miracle,” said Elvira Romana, an Italian pilgrim. “His presence is vital to us.”

Matteo Licari, a visitor from Sardinia, echoed the sentiment: “We are all praying for his recovery and hoping he can return to leading the Church soon.”

At St. Peter’s Basilica, Archbishop Rino Fisichella urged worshippers to intensify their prayers. A special Mass was held by the Diocese of Rome on Monday evening, seeking divine strength for the pope as he faces this critical moment.

Doctors Remain Vigilant

Medical experts continue to monitor the pope’s condition, mindful of potential complications. Dr. Sergio Alfieri, a senior physician at Gemelli Hospital, reiterated that the risk of the lung infection spreading to the bloodstream remains a serious concern. “At his age, sepsis is a real danger, and we are doing everything possible to prevent it,” he stated.

The Vatican confirmed that the blood transfusion had improved Pope Francis’ hemoglobin levels, aiding oxygen transport in his body, while his platelet levels have remained stable.

Despite his condition, the pope remains conscious and alert. In a written message shared during his usual Sunday prayer, he expressed gratitude for the medical staff and the countless messages of support from around the world.

As the situation develops, the Vatican continues to provide regular updates, and the faithful remain hopeful for his recovery.
