Schools on the Aegean islands of Thera (Santorini), Ios, Anafi, and Amorgos will remain closed until Friday, February 28, 2025, as authorities continue to monitor seismic activity in the region.
According to a joint statement from the Permanent Scientific Committee for Seismic Risk Assessment and the Permanent Scientific Committee for Monitoring the Hellenic Volcanic Arc, seismic activity in the sea area of Anydros—located between Santorini and Amorgos—has shown signs of decline. The committees convened on Saturday to assess the latest developments.
While the situation appears to be stabilising, officials will reassess school operations in a follow-up meeting. The decision to extend closures prioritises public safety, particularly for students and educators.
The committees also noted that seismic activity within the Santorini caldera remains unchanged. However, a decrease in ground deformation rates has been observed in the broader Santorini area. Monitoring efforts will continue to ensure any changes are promptly addressed.
Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and follow official updates as scientific assessments progress.
