Alexis Kougias Passed Away

Today, Alexis Kougias passed away after a fierce battle with cancer. The renowned criminal lawyer breathed his last at the age of 74.

It is recalled that in January 2025, he announced undergoing surgery for prostate cancer and subsequently followed up with preventive immunotherapy. On February 24, his children announced that his health condition was “very critical.”

Who Was Alexis Kougias

Alexis Kougias studied law initially at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and then at the University of Athens, from which he graduated. He began working as a lawyer in 1974.

Alexis Kougias married at the age of 32; however, a few months later, he lost his wife in a traffic accident.

He remarried on January 24, 2001, to model Evi Vatidou, and their marriage lasted until October 2007. They have two children, Christos Kougias (born March 9, 2002) and Maira Kougias (born January 20, 2005), both of whom are studying law.

The Major Cases He Undertook

In his long career as a lawyer, Alexis Kougias handled thousands of criminal cases. Many of these attracted significant public attention. He was the lawyer for Vangelis Rocharis and represented Dimitra Margeti in the trial of the Pallini satanists.

He represented police officer Epaminondas Korkoneas in the trial for the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos. He also supported the prosecution for the parents of Eleni Topaloudi in the trial for the rape and murder of the unfortunate student in Rhodes.

More recently, he represented actor Dimitris Lignadis when he was accused of rape, and until today, he was representing the mother from Patras in the trial for the murder of her children.
